I find these a bit archaïc and unintuitive, which is a bit sad when it's probably the front door your clients will see first. Registered and downloaded from the official SE free trial page and it works as intended, it just won't be linked to Steam obviously. Unless you don't mind losing 14days of play to buy a full account later (and if you know how to register for it) of course. To sum things up if you want the game on Steam you have no choice but to pay at least the base version of the game to try it out. And we don't have a single clue how to register for it anyway since I couldn't find any links in the product's description. The Steam free trial seems to be a whole different thing on it's own: limited to 14 days of trial and without any possibilities to upgrade to a full account later (which is 100% pointless.). To make it work you have to use the download link from the official page, right after registering, that allows you to download a client specific to the SquarEnix free trial version.
